Teeth sensitivity to thermal stimuli (cold, hot water, or food), to the air and/or sometimes to sweets is usually caused by gum receding and the subsequent exposure of the teeth roots. The roots of the teeth are not covered by enamel and thus the various stimuli are transferred easily to the inside of the tooth (pulp) where sensory nerve endings are located.
Gum recession can be caused by improper brushing (using a hard toothbrush, incorrect movements and excessive force), periodontal disease, or overeruption of teeth when opp6sing teeth are missing.
The dentist is able to suggest appropriate treatment to reduce the sensitivity.
