Teeth whitening is safe and does not pose any danger to humans, nor to their teeth, provided that it is done correctly by a dentist who knows the rules of this procedure.

There are several ways of bleaching. The most valid and efficient way to whiten teeth is a combined office and home method and always under the supervision of the dentist. The process begins in the dental office and continues at home with the specialized trays, which are fabricated by the dentist or his dental technician and are given to the patient to be used according to his instructions. These whitening trays should be used with the bleaching agent and for as long as the doctor recommends. Follow-ups are made at regular intervals until the desired result is achieved. If necessary the doctor can change the time of tray use or of the bleaching agent or lengthen or shorten the duration of the treatment. All this is always done under the guidance, control and supervision of the doctor.

Not all cases and types of teeth are suitable for whitening. There are teeth which are bleached very easily and teeth which does not and often the final result cannot be accurately predicted. This must be clearly explained to patients beforehand, since bleaching is a "blind" technique and to have good results, each case must be appropriately selected.

Duration of result: Teeth, regardless of the whitening technique and the whitening agent that will be used, have a tendency to return to their original colour. Of course, this time cannot be predicted. On average we can say that with the correct maintenance, it can be maintained for at least five years. A bleaching maintenance regimen includes the use of the trays and whitening product in the office or at home by the patient every six months or a year and according to the doctor's instructions.

Note: Lasers or special lamps do not give a better result than the bleaching splints used at home, which usually give the best results!
