Abstract:
The radiographic examination constitutes an important diagnostic aid and essential tool in clinical dental practice, both for diagnosis and for treatment. However, an important disadvantage in conventional radiography is the overlapping of various anatomical structures, that creates a problem in the X-ray diagnosis. Since 1970, a solution to this problem is provided with the aid of computed tomography (CT). In this diagnostic method, the use of X-rays is combined with computer technology, to produce accurate three-dimensional images of the area. The aim of this article is to give an overview of the principles of axial tomography, the advantages and disadvantages of this radiographic method, as well as its applications in the dental practice.
